Is This What They Mean By “The Great Resignation”?

by:

Welcome to our From the Data series. This is where our data engineers get to have a little fun with the NetWise database to see what we can learn. (And what you can learn about what can be done with our data.)

What data are we looking at?

Here we looked at the “job function” distribution by state. We only included contacts where we had a value available, which was still tens of millions of records. From there we looked at new versus historical data (current platform data vs last quarter’s platform data), filtered to the US (minus outlying territories.)

The Query

  • We wanted to look at job titles initially, but we have thousands of different titles, so we decided to look at job function.
  • Job function is more descriptive of what a person does for their job. We have a limited number of job functions which makes for a cleaner analysis than using the title field, which has over 2 million unique values
  • Two simple queries: One analyzed the distribution of job functions for our current platform data, the other for the previous version of our platform data
  • From there, we imported the data into Excel and analyzed the number of states with a 10% or more increase for any job function.

What we found

  • The ‘stay at home parent’ job function had at least a 10% increase in proportion for 47 states (94%)!
  • The ‘retired’ job function had at least a 10% increase in proportion for 33 states (66%)!
  • Proportion is defined as the total number of contacts with a given job function in a state divided by the total number of contacts in the state. For example, we have 24% of Alabama contacts working in general management.

Why this is cool

  • It is interesting that ‘stay at home parent’ and ‘retired’ had such a large increase over the past few months.
  • Could this be a result of people leaving the workforce due to the pandemic or related to the ‘Great Resignation?’ What do you think?
